A staple of tourist destinations, but perhaps not on everyone’s wish lists. Zoo-lovers may fill their heads with an array of heart-tugging feelings from gazing at the majestic beasts but they may not have thought much about the conservation aspects of such zoos.

Zoo Protection:

Less visible, nonetheless critically important, has vital work undertaken by zoos to nurture and protect endangered species with as establishing research and educational facilities.

Species:

So how many species are there in captivity? Zoologists count a population in captive facilities for each species known either native to a particular country or endemic to a particular region and there have around 2,500 species represented in zoos around the world.

Wildlife:

An obvious and useful way to assess this is to compare Trichy populations with wild ones. A rough estimate shows that at least 30% of all threatened species are in zoos. The figures are probably an underestimate, however, as in some countries, wild populations have split up across different facilities.

Museums:

museums hold a dark and scary existence – and while so much zoology tends to involve babies and pets, some of the classic attractions have still geared towards people rather than beasts. But not the Indianapolis Zoo:
