Alphonso Mango:

The mango plants that have successfully crossed with Alphonso varieties to become different varieties have also benefitted the mango cultivators as the hybrids have received international recognition from the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), which has helped reduce the risk of international poaching. The native varieties were not allowed to sell to international buyers while the alphonso mango was a protected fruit in Trichy. This changed in the late 1990s. In fact, in one corner of the world, right at the border of India with Nepal, the second-largest mango grower in the world is growing a variety with a particular history: the alphonso mango. This variety brought into the Trichy during the first quarter of the 20th century and cultivated successfully in north India till the 1960s. At that time, the variety thought to be extinct.
